Description The objectives of the department are:

- Producing qualified Mechanical Engineers at undergraduate level.
- Conducting research and development activities relevant to the country needs.
- Conducting consultancy services.

The department offers courses both in conventional and non-conventional energy resources and the technologies associated with them.

Current duties and responsibilities of the Energy Research and Training Centre:

- Study, assess and develop the potential renewable energy and new energy technology resources of the country and promote the efficient use of all energy resources;

- Conduct research on energy resources and energy efficient technologies including formulations and information of relevant development projects;

- Provide training in standards of electrical installation, and RETs appliances, construction and installation and co-ordinate training on a wide range of energy topics.

Energy sector focus Renewable Energy, energy related topics.

Future plans include research and development in energy efficiency, energy auditing, renewable energy and transfer of technology.
Renewable Energy Technology systems, including:

- application, construction and installation of solar water heaters & solar cookers;
-
installation, repair and maintenance of PV systems;
- standards of electrical installation;
- co-ordination of training on a wide range of energy topics
.
Target groups 4th & 5th year undergraduate students;
the department also has plans to offer short-term courses for people from industry, one of which will be energy-related.
