Aims & Objectives

The high dependency on wood-fuels, supply shortages and associated degradation of the environment resulting from over-exploitation of forests and woodlands is common in all IGAD countries.

In both urban and rural areas, the low level of household incomes, and irregular cash flow prevents many households from buying more modern appliances or switching to alternative energy sources for cooking and lighting.

In response to this, the project aims to:

  • develop and harmonise Regional Household Energy Policies
  • Identify and promote information, exchange experiences and carry out training and research
  • increase the awareness of the IGAD member states and the international community on priority issues.
  • promote the use of affordable and sustainable energy sources
  • transfer energy efficient technologies between member states
  • promote co-ordination of present initiatives
