The Czech Republic ratified the Kyoto Protocol in October 2001.

Strategy to mitigate climate system of the Earth in the Czech Republic approved by the Czech Government on May 17,1999 was a key document how to achieve the Kyoto targets.

 

As the energy intensity of the Czech Republic is one of the highest in the world the Government of the Czech Republic put the priority to own measures define by:

CO2 Emissions in the Czech Republic
  • State environmental policy

• Energy policy

• State program for energy savings and utilization of renewable energy sources - implemented through Czech Energy Agency and State Environmental Fund

• The changes in the environmental legislation - Energy Management, Waste Management, Emissions limits
Joint Implementation
  In accordance with the Kyoto protocol of the UNFCC, the Ministry of Environment of the Czech Republic lays down the framework for JI projects in the Czech Republic, which has been approved in January 7, 2002.

The Ministry has prepared the institutional framework for JI projects.

Emission Trading
  The economic department of the Ministry of Environment has started the preparation the scheme for Emission Trading.

The Climate Change Unit was established at the Ministry of Environment in May 2003.
